24

Holy Flip! Holy Holy Holy. . .Holy. Smokers.

Are you a 24 watcher? If you are then you know what I'm talking about. Just when you thought you'd seen all TV has to offer they go and do that.

If you're not a fan of 24 then you answer Jordan's question.

Can someone who is not baptized go to heaven?

hey john,
i want to pose a question for all you 24 watchers. i am one of them, so i don't say this with an air of superiority or self-awareness you guys don't have. after all, the question was posed to me by someone else.

seeing as how 24 uses torture to get answers and how the countless murders on every episode are seen as the means which justify the end, can we see this as a healthy television show to watch. if you don't care about such issues, obviously you will be okay with it. but i do. i was an avid watcher of this show for the past couple years. but when someone posed this question to me, i had trouble watching it this past weekend. i don't believe in torture or murder, whatever the reason. so how can this be my favorite show? i don't know. something i'm wrestling with. i used to make fun of that classic christian person who would say "don't watch simpsons or friends because it teaches bad morals and promiscuity". but i'm struggling a bit more with brushing this one off. any thoughts?

I can't get into 24 any more, either, but that's mostly because it's the same old Jack saves the world from terrorists story and I'm so bored I could fling myself out the nearest window. That being said, what bugs me about 24 is that it reinforces middle eastern stereotypes (except for the odd Muslim "good guy") and the spread of fear. I'm not against the show itself, these are just fragile times and people need to be careful about the messages they're sending. I sound so stinkin preachy, but then I feel the same about old Disney movies that show all girls as a beautiful bimbo who's biggest concern in life is finding a prince, so I am kind of preachy- ish. Ish.

So I'm one of the ones that will "Amen" your "holy smokes!" Love it! Is it bad to say that one of my favorite things about January is that Jack is back!?

On another note, I've had to wrestle with this question Blair poses too...more with CSI but whatever. Part of what I've concluded is that yes, it probably shouldn't be my favorite form of entertainment. The other thing I've realized though, is that there is some reality to it. Not that Jack can save the world or that all that can actually happen in 24 hours but that there is evil in the world. It's the epic battle of good vs evil in every episode. What's interesting to me is wondering why there is such appeal to shows like that. What does that say about society as a whole?

Somehow, I've never been able to get into '24' at all. I've watched 2 or 3 episodes, including the one from the other night But nothing, nada, it didn't capture me. I guess I've always been a Law & Order, CSI, Criminal Minds (my new fave show) kind'a gal. Similar shows I know, but yet so different.

As for watching shows that teach morality, those are few & far btwn. In fact, off the top of my head, I can't think of any. Not even Gilmore Girls.
