Smyth

Trade the heart and soul of the Oilers, Mr. Canada, just to save a buck.

Kevin Lowe deserves to be. . . so many things I won't repeat here.

FRICK!

i was wondering what you'd think of that. does that mean they've written off the playoffs this year? wierd state of affairs...

Reminds me of how shocked and mad I was when the Jets traded Selanne. At least Oilers fans had some inkling that Smith might go. But still, I'm surprised.

oh man. so, how can you cheer for the oilers now?

Classy guy that Ryan Smyth, right till the end, not choosing to speak today for Messier's sake. Maybe they'll sign him in the summer who knows. Or maybe calgary will. I wonder what kind of cash he was asking for...

Quote from Ryan Smyth this morning........"Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today, I want to be a part of it, New York, New York......"

lol

oh john. as much of a canucks fan as i am i still feel for you "non-playoff" oiler fans.(sorry had to get that shot in)i dont know of any other team in the league this year that has a player that is/was the face of their team. Even though he never had the same numbers and maybe never will, he is to the oilers what steve yzerman was to the red wings. Ryan Smyth was more than the franchise player, he was the heart of the team, and boy could you ever see that they needed that heart last night after the trade. sorry john

I have an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach. Like I lost a friend or my dog died, but worse. Lowe needs to be fired. ASAP. What a &*%$$#! We can only hope and pray that there was some sort of backroom deal going on and our Smytty will be back in the city of champions come July. This is a nightmare.

My feelings exactly Benj.

I was driving to work today and Peter Maher was saying how he read a report that "they were only one hundred thousand apart" in the negotations. I want to believe that's not true because it would make it even worse.

Seeing Smitty tearing up at the press conference "that's where my heart is" was awful.

Something went wrong, I think Smitty's agent blew it and Ryan had no idea this was going to happen.

I'd like to believe the summer resigning is a possibility but I'm very doubtful. The more success the Isle have in the playoffs the less chance Smitty will come back.

P.S. Its obvious we both wish to swear but haven't do to our proper british upbringing. So here's my email - johnclose4th@yahoo.com.

Go ahead, send me an email and swear all you want. Ha.

I'm with both you and Benj on this one. Except, well, 27 Million over 5 years was what i heard today that Lowe offered and Smyth's agent rejected. Are we suckers for feeling sorry for Smyth that he turned down 27 million?

I think he's worth that much to Edmonton because of the heart factor. BUT, is a guy that scores 95% of his goals within 7 feet of the crease worth that kind of cake to anyone else?

I definitely think Lowe should be canned though. First the Pronger deal for a bag of pucks, and then he trades Smytty for extra water bottles? Lowe had some huge assets and gave them away. I'm not crushed and devastated that Smyth is gone if he actually turned down that kind of money, but if Lowe is going to trade his superstars he needs to get something better in return.

Ah well, at least he's got 27 million to blow this summer, maybe we can find someone that scores goals when he's not in his contract year?

Signed, bitter oiler fan...

PS - i heard it's brutally cold in Edmonton today... last i heard it was -94

One can always live on the memories.........hahahahahohohohohohohahaha

Maybe if Lowe didn't sign players and pay them based on their once-in-a-lifetime playoff performances a la Horcoff, Torres, etc., he would have had that extra 100 grand for Smyth.

At the end of the day, blame it on his agent....

oh man. this is getting rough.
I'd also blame it on Lowe. Last year, when he picked up Pronger, Roloson and Samsonov, i thought he was quite a good business man.
Then he went and did the Pronger deed, gave Pisani and Torres half of the oilers budget, and now this.

I'll just say he isn't a Brian Burke or a Bob Gainey, thats for sure. He's about as bad as Garth Snow. But, ohhh, wait, Snow got Smitty. LOWEr that Snow? Ouch.
